S659 : The Effect of ascorbic acid and prolin foliar application on the physiological and morphological traits of Zea mays L. subjected under water limit conditions

Abstarct: Abstract In order to investigate the Effect of ascorbic acid and prolin foliar application on the physiological and morphological traits of Zea mays L. subjected to water limit conditions a Split plot factorial experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications in research farm of Faculty of Agriculture, Shahroud University of Technology. Experimental treatments included 2 levels of irrigation: control and Stopping irrigation at the stage of male inflorescences, 3 levels of ascorbic acid (0, 15 and 30 mM) and 3 levels of proline (0, 30 and 60 mM). Foliar application of ascorbic acid and proline was performed two times a week before the emergence of male inflorescence (Tassling). In this experiment, water stress decreased stem dry weight, stem diameter, number of grains per ear and 100-seed weight. Seed yield decreased by 16 days at irrigation interval of 2067.7 kg / ha. Chlorophyll a and total chlorophyll decreased significantly in plants that experienced stress. Stress reduced the percentage of oil in maize. In this study, foliar application of 30 mM ascorbic acid increased 100-seed weight to significant level. Seed yield increased by 1470.7 kg / ha using 30 mM ascorbic acid. Application of 60 mM proline increased oil content and 30 mM application increased protein content. 100 grains weight increased under stress conditions using both levels of ascorbic acid. Plants that experienced non stress conditions had a hundred-seed weight when they received 30 mM ascorbic acid. At stress conditions, application of 15 and 30 mM ascorbic acid improved leaf relative water content and membrane stability index. Application of 60 mM proline increased total chlorophyll content under both stress and non-stress conditions plants that experienced 16 days of irrigation and did not receive ascorbic acid and proline showed the lowest relative leaf water content, and application of ascorbic acid and proline increased this trait to a significant level under stress conditions. Application of 60 mM proline and non-application of ascorbic acid increased the ascorbate peroxidase activity under stress conditions. Application of 30 and 60 mM proline at non-stress and non-application of ascorbic acid reduced this trait to a significant level. finally, 30 mM ascorbic acid foliar application can be introduced to reduce the effects of dehydration stress on maize.
